What Is a Thobe? A Clear Guide for Muslim Men

A thobe is a long, ankle-length robe worn by Muslim men — modest, loose, and usually long-sleeved. Also spelled thawb, it's known regionally as a dishdasha, kandura, jubba or djellaba. Worn for daily life, prayer, Jummah and Eid, it's the most recognised garment in Muslim men's dress.

Hey brother. Maybe you've just started praying again and want something to wear that feels right. Maybe Eid is coming and you're tired of the same shirt. Maybe you just kept seeing the word and wondered what it actually means. Wherever you're coming from — here's everything about the thobe, in plain language, one question at a time.

What does "thobe" mean?

The word thobe (ثوب) is Arabic, and it simply means "garment" or "a piece of clothing." Over time, it came to mean the specific robe Muslim men wear — long, loose, covering the body with dignity.

You'll see it spelled different ways in English: thobe, thawb, thaub, tobe. They're all the same word, just written as people hear it. "Thawb" is closest to the Arabic; "thobe" is the most common spelling in North America.

How do you pronounce thobe?

Thobe is pronounced "thobe" — one syllable, rhyming with "robe," with a soft th sound at the start like in "thumb." The plural is thawbs or thobes. Simple as that — if you can say "robe," you can say "thobe."

What is a thobe called in different countries?

The thobe goes by many names. Same core garment — a long modest robe — but the name and cut change from region to region.

  • Thobe/thawb: the general Arabic term, most common in Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf.

  • Kandura: the name in the UAE. Collarless, with a small tassel (tarboosh) at the neck.

  • Dishdasha: used in Oman, Kuwait and parts of the Gulf.

  • Jubba: common across South Asia and among English-speaking Muslims in the West.

  • Djellaba: the North African version, usually hooded, rooted in Moroccan tradition.

  • Qamis / kameez: a related term used in some regions for a long shirt or robe.

So if someone says thawb, kandura or dishdasha, they're usually pointing at the same idea — a robe of dignity, cut the way their region wears it.

What is the difference between a thobe and a kandura, dishdasha or jubba?

thobe and a kandura, dishdasha or jubba for men

They are the same garment with different names and small regional differences. The kandura (UAE) is collarless with a neck tassel. The dishdasha (Oman, Kuwait) often carries fine embroidery. The jubba is the same robe named in the South Asian and Western context. The Saudi thobe has a structured shirt-style collar and cuffs.

So none of these are a different kind of clothing — they're the same robe, cut to local taste. Think of it like the way a coat is called a jacket, an overcoat or a parka depending on where you are and how it's made.

What is a thobe made of?

thobe fabrics for men

Thobes are most often made from cotton, poly-cotton blends, linen or, for colder weather, heavier woven fabrics and wool.

  • Cotton: breathable and soft, best for daily wear, warm months and long prayers.

  • Poly-cotton blend: holds its shape, resists wrinkles, easy to care for.

  • Linen: light and cool, ideal for summer and hot climates.

  • Wool / heavy weave: warmth for winter, weddings and formal settings.

If you're in a colder climate — say Canada or the northern US — a heavier weave or a layer underneath carries a thobe comfortably through winter. In summer, cotton or linen keeps you cool. One garment, the right fabric for the season.

Why do Muslim men wear the thobe?

Muslim men wear the thobe for three reasons, usually all at once: modesty, the Sunnah, and identity.

Modesty (haya). Islam asks men to cover and carry themselves with dignity, not display. A loose, full-length robe does that naturally — nothing tight, nothing showy.

The Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ favoured simple, modest garments and loved the colour white. He ﷺ said: "Wear white clothes, for they are among the best of your garments." (Sunan Abi Dawud). Wearing a thobe is a quiet way of following his example.

Identity. Especially in the West, putting on a thobe is a small act of confidence — dressing as who you are, without asking permission for it.

Is wearing a thobe Sunnah?

Wearing a thobe is not obligatory (fard), but it reflects the Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ wore long, modest robes and encouraged simple, clean, often white clothing. So the thobe is a loved and encouraged way to dress — a choice made out of love for the example of the Prophet ﷺ, never a command or a burden.

In other words: you don't have to wear one to be a good Muslim. But many brothers choose it because it draws them closer to the Sunnah and helps them feel grounded in who they are.

What is the right length for a thobe?

For men, the thobe is traditionally worn so it sits above the ankles — the ankles stay visible. This follows the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ, who taught men to keep their lower garment above the ankle.

It's a simple, dignified standard: not dragging on the floor, not too short — resting just above the ankle bone. When you choose your size, this is worth keeping in mind, which is why getting the length right matters as much as the fit. Our thobe size guide helps you measure for it.

What is worn under a thobe?

Under a thobe, men usually wear a plain undershirt and loose cotton trousers or a sirwal — light drawstring trousers. The undershirt keeps things comfortable and modest; the trousers preserve modesty when sitting or in prayer.

The aim is simple: light, breathable, and long enough that awrah (the area that must be covered) stays covered in every position — standing, sitting, in sujood. For a fuller breakdown, read what to wear under a thobe.

When do Muslim men wear a thobe?

The thobe is worn for both everyday life and special occasions:

  • Daily wear: a light cotton thobe, easy and comfortable for work, errands or home.

  • Jummah and daily prayer: a clean white or neutral thobe, simple and breathable.

  • Eid: something fuller and finer; a deeper colour or a crisp white thobe in the Sunnah way.

  • Weddings and nikah: premium fabric and considered detail, often with a bisht (cloak) over the top.

  • Hajj and Umrah: ihram for the rites themselves, with a plain white thobe worn before and after.

So a thobe isn't only for the mosque or Eid morning. For many brothers it's simply how they dress, every day.

Who can wear a thobe?

Anyone can wear a thobe. It is not limited to a particular nationality, ethnicity or Arab background — it's worn by Muslim men across the world, from Morocco to Indonesia, and by reverts and born Muslims alike.

The thobe belongs to the Muslim man as an expression of faith and modesty, not to one culture. If you're Muslim and you want to wear one, it's yours to wear.

What are the main styles of thobe?

There are several regional styles, each with a distinct cut:

  • Saudi thobe: crisp collar, straight, clean cut; the most formal. See Saudi thobes.

  • Emirati thobe (kandura): collarless, with a neck tassel; soft and flowing. See Emirati thobes.

  • Omani thobe: tailored with subtle collar embroidery, lightweight. See Omani thobes.

  • Moroccan thobe: relaxed, full-length, often hooded. See Moroccan thobes.

  • Djellaba (Moroccan hooded robe): the hooded version, loose and full-length. See djellabas.
  • Royal thobe: premium fabric and embroidery for Eid and weddings. See Royal thobes.

How do you choose the right thobe?

Choosing a thobe comes down to four things: fabric, fit, length and occasion.

  • Fabric: cotton or linen for everyday and warm weather; heavier weaves for winter and formal wear.

  • Fit: a thobe should drape, not pull. If you're between sizes, size up.

  • Length: above the ankle, as covered earlier.

  • Occasion: simple cotton for daily and Jummah; premium fabric and detail for Eid and weddings.

If you have a Western build — longer arms, broader shoulders — look for a brand that cuts with that in mind, so the thobe sits right without losing its classic line.

How do you wash and care for a thobe?

Most cotton and blended thobes can be machine-washed cold and hung to dry, then ironed on medium heat. Wash whites separately to keep them bright, and avoid high heat, which can shrink natural fabrics.

Hang your thobe rather than folding it long-term, and it'll keep its shape and fall. Treated well, a good thobe lasts for years.
